Mikell serves WKYC as a meteorologist who specializes in weather forecasting and climate change across Northeast Ohio. He joined the WKYC team in September 2021. Prior to this, he served the station’s sister station in Austin, Texas KVUE as a meteorologist, traffic reporter, and an Emmy-nominated morning anchor.
Moreover, he served in the Buckeye State at WLIO in Lima, Ohio as a weekend meteorologist since 2016. Later, he was raised to serve as Chief Meteorologist. However, his love of meteorology debuted when he was very young whilegrowing up in south Mississippi.”Severe storms was a huge interest of mine growing up. From watching my local station WDAM, the tornado drills at school, to living through one of the most destructive storms in US history: Hurricane Katrina. All of it impacted my decision to return to school in pursuit of my second degree: Meteorology.”
Upon his graduation, he migrated to Philadelphia to serve in employment for Behavioral Health and Education succeeded by recruitment in the creative industry. Moreover, he served the National Weather Service Mount Holly/Philadelphia and Fox 29 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as an intern. Further, he experienced extreme weather from two of the heaviest snowfall events in Philadelphia history.
For example, Superstorm Sandy, a tornado outbreak in western Ohio, memorable flooding in Central Texas, and many others. During his career, he has attained many accolades. For instance, a State Championship victory, raising more than $7,500 in the Real Men Wear Pink campaign for breast cancer through the American Cancer Society. Additionally, he was listed on the Ohio School Boards Association Media Honor Roll.
Further, he served as a former “Big” with the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization. Additionally, he serves the Gamma Theta Upsilon fraternity as a member. Also, he serves as a member of the Phi Theta Kappa fraternity, the American Meteorological Society, the National Weather Association, and the National Association of Black Journalists. And, he previously served as a Board Member for the Austin LGBT Chamber of Commerce. Else, he serves on the board of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Cleveland.
